[Congenital disease] I had equinus deformity from not exercising hard enough
I am going to be in the 2nd year of middle school. When I was young, I would walk on the street with my mom and a lot of times, I heard other kids asking their moms “Mom, why is that lady so short?” There had been many times when my mom was treated as a child. I didn’t care about it much when I was little, it just made me think my mom was short. When I was home, my mom looked tall because I was little. I didn’t think she was that short because she wore high heels outside.
I realized that my mom was short after I grew taller and passed her height. When we were told to stand according to our height in class, I was usually one of the first on the list, but other than that, I didn’t have any inconvenience because of it. The “height number” was not that significant in elementary school, and there wasn’t too much difference between me and others.
That time I didn’t know what genetics or genes were all about, so I never thought that I would be short like my mom. When I was in 5th grade, my mom visited Professor Song. I didn’t know what it was for, but I was examined there. I didn’t feel anything when he told me that I could grow only up to 142cm. I thought “I have no problem with living my life, do I really have to do it?”
I couldn’t understand my mom was going through due to short height, but somehow I thought being short was not good. That time the professor told me I that just have to spend 6 months with the ring on. I didn’t think much and agreed to the surgery.
I had never had a surgery before so I was just happy that my mom did whatever I asked her to do when I was at the hospital. The thing that made me the happiest is that my mom got me a cell phone. I forgot about all the worries about the surgery. I was just happy that I got what I wanted so badly. I showed off my cell phone to my friends right away.
That day my mom told me not to go to the school. I didn’t want to miss school, so I stubbornly insisted that I go to school the next day, and then go to the hospital the day after. When I went to school the next day, my friends gave me lots of presents with handwritten letters. I felt thankful, but bad for not preparing anything for them. I didn’t want to be away from my friends, but I somehow thought fun things might happen at the hospital.
I finally got to the ward after all the hospital admission procedures. I wished that I could be using a single room, but it was a 6-people ward.It wasn’t my first time being there, but it still seemed very new and foreign to me for some reason. When I looked around the room, there were only grandmas in the room. For some reason I felt like they were really mean. Even the caregivers were all old ladies; I didn’t like being there and wanted to go home.
They took x-rays at night and took some more pictures at the sports medicine clinic. I didn’t know why I had to have those photos taken. On my way to the ward, I saw no patients but some doctors and nurses in the hallway, even though it was only 10 PM. All the lights were off on the way to the ward, so I couldn’t even watch TV. Normally, I would be watching TV or playing on my computer at home. I got so bored and couldn’t fall asleep so I asked my mom to go outside together and came back to the hospital around 12.
I had two days until the surgery, which I wasn’t even worried about. At that point, the fear for intravenous infusion was a lot bigger than the fear for the surgery. My veins were hard to find, so they had to poke me at least a few times before they could find it. They repeated slapping my arm, trying it with a rubber band, moving onto the other arm, and poking a few more times until they found it.
That was how they got my blood. When I saw my blood, I was happy that I was done with it. I had nothing to do at the hospital but my mom was busy. The TV was occupied with the grandmas watching boring shows for seniors. I received a computer program from a teacher who did music and art therapies at NamChon Dream Class, that was fun.
The day before the surgery was the most painful moment for me. Because that meant I had to fast. On that day, I saw a person who had the surgery done for the first time. He had a ring around his leg, it looked scary and disgusting. Now I was going to have to wear that! I got afraid of the surgery for the first time then. But, I didn’t tell my mom about it.
I was able to return back to the ward after a successful surgery. When I became conscious from anesthesia, I was shocked to see my leg. It was twice as big as before, and I felt some metal when I touched it. It was hard to even go to the bathroom. But my legs were a bit sore and but felt no different than how it felt before the surgery.
It was hard to move around the wheelchair at first, but the caregiver lady help me with it. I was an unskilled first-time wheelchair driver.
My mother swallowed her anger and motivated me to exercise
I cried during my first disinfection because of too much pain, my mother next to me, cried as well. I went to sports medicine clinic to exercise. I exercising bending my knees and stretching my ankle or ligaments. It didn’t hurt much but one time, I got shocked when blood came out the pin. I was supposed to exercise every day at the sports clinic, and come up to the ward and do some other exercises. But I was becoming lazy, and blood started coming out of my leg. That’s when I realized that I need to exercise regularly.
Sometimes, my friends wanted to come visit me. But because I didn’t want them to see me like this, I lied to them and told them I was already discharged. After I was discharged, I only moved to go to the bathroom and didn’t’ exercise much. I got scolded by my mother a lot too. I went to the Social Services center to exercise twice a week. But I couldn’t go out on a rainy day.
Then we got a call from my school. They said I would be kept in the same class for another year if I don’t come to school. So I went to school on a wheelchair. It was difficult to move around because my classroom was on the 3rd floor. So instead, I started homeschooling, and get the credit for 6th grade.
Equinus deformity correction surgery
I really hated exercising. But the result of it was cruel. I ended up having equinus deformity from not exercising. Usually people say equinus deformity normal for a person who had a lengthening of 10cm. But I felt that it was unfair because I didn’t even lengthen that much. But at least my fear for surgery was less than before.
After the surgery, my mom had a harder time than I did. I feel sorry for our whole family because my mom couldn’t do any housework because she was occupied with taking care of me.
I started exercising hard after the surgery. After I was able to walk with crutches with a cast on, my mom told me that we were going to take the bus instead of a taxi. I really didn’t like people staring toward my legs, but I had to put up with it.
Problems are bound to happen if you don’t exercising from being tired and lazy. If you overcome this phase, you’ll be able to run around with like other kids.
Be strong!
