Retired from Korea University Guro Hospital, Became Director Last Year

추진 Collaboration with City on Digital Healthcare

“New Daesung Hospital will be reborn as a specialized hospital giving hope to patients with dwarfism and limb deformities, and Bucheon will devote itself to improving the quality of medical care as a leading city in digital healthcare.”
New Daesung Hospital Medical Director Song Hae-ryong (MD, Pediatric Orthopedics) is considered the best doctor in the treatment and surgery of dwarfism and limb deformities, also known as 'short stature disability.'
After retiring from Korea University Guro Hospital, where Director Song had been for a long time, his appointment as the Medical Director of a mid-sized general hospital in Bucheon in December of last year became a hot topic.
He, with a doctorate in orthopedics, decided to specialize in pediatric orthopedics following a suggestion from his mentor, Professor Lee Seok-hyeon, who served as the director of Korea University Guro Hospital. Since learning the Ilizarov technique in 1989, which is a device that lengthens bones to increase height, he has devoted most of his medical career to treating patients with dwarfism to increase their height and correcting rare limb deformities. He has treated over 3,000 cases to date.
He explained, "Dwarfism is caused by gene mutations, and there is a 50% chance that a short-statured child will be born between a short-statured person and a normal person, and a 100% chance between short-statured people." He added, "More than anything, I wanted to break the social prejudice against patients with short stature disabilities and go beyond treating deformed bones to straighten out their crooked lives."
He founded the Korea Small Stature Association (Little People of Korea) in 2000 while working at the Gyeongsang National University School of Medicine, and has been sponsoring summer and winter camps every year, continuing meetings with over 200 patients and their families. This year, it was held at the Bucheon Korea Hotel in August with the support of the Daesung Foundation Social Welfare Corporation.
He said, "The headquarters of the Korea Short Stature Disability Association will be established at Seoul Daesung Hospital in Hongje-dong in October," and added, "The Daesung Foundation Social Welfare Corporation will sponsor surgery and hospitalization treatment for association members and their families who are experiencing financial difficulties."
Medical Director Song also revealed his aspirations for establishing a digital healthcare system in the future.
Director Song clearly stated the reason and purpose for joining New Daesung Hospital by saying, "I determined that it is the optimal hospital to realize patient care and treatment by incorporating digital healthcare in the era of a super-aging society."
The Daesung Foundation is also seeking to transform itself into a 'Specialized Center for Joints, Spine, and Anti-Aging' in preparation for a super-aging society in line with Director Song's will. The name New Daesung Hospital was also changed from the existing Daesung Hospital along with the recruitment of Director Song.
He said, "We are planning to establish a health town on the 66,000㎡ site in Daebudo owned by the Daesung Foundation, in collaboration with Ansan City, including 500 senior townhouses, a nursing hospital, and a nursing home," and added, "We plan to pilot a non-face-to-face treatment system using remote treatment systems installed in hospitals and nursing homes, where attending physicians and specialists for each disease can examine patients."
Furthermore, he aims to play a role in helping Bucheon leap forward as a leading city in digital healthcare through collaboration with Bucheon City.
Director Song Hae-ryong emphasized, "Bucheon City is a suitable city as a digital healthcare testbed with a population of 780,000 and a high proportion of elderly people," and added, "If combined with Bucheon City's advanced integrated care policies, the synergy effect will be doubled and the city's medical standards will be further improved."
Meanwhile, Dr. Song Hae-ryong received a commendation from the Minister of Health and Welfare in 2008 in recognition of his contribution to the medical expense support project for patients with rare and intractable diseases, and won the Achievement Award at the 1st SBS Hope Tomorrow Sharing Awards in 2011.
