[ This is a testimonial from a Chinese patient who underwent leg lengthening surgery by Professor Song Hae-ryong at Korea University Guro Hospital ]

My name is 웨한, a Chinese patient. After undergoing calf lengthening surgery in 2009-2010, my height increased from 161cm to 167cm. However, the average height of Chinese men is already over 170cm (especially the height of men in large Chinese cities is tall). I think my height is short. Also, lengthening the calf by 6cm loses the balance between the thigh and calf, making only the calf look longer. I was reluctant to wear shorts in the summer. So, a year ago, I decided that I needed to have thigh lengthening surgery.
I heard that thigh lengthening surgery is very painful. I visited many hospitals. Finally, in March 2014, I visited a hospital in Beijing. After paying the surgery fee, I quietly lay in the hospital room waiting for surgery. However, this hospital has a very long history in calf lengthening procedures, but it has only performed a few thigh lengthening procedures. Perhaps that's why my heart was filled with fear, and I eventually decided not to have the procedure at this hospital. I had been preparing for this for a long time. I invested a lot of mental energy, so the moment I gave up the surgery, I felt relieved but also deeply disappointed.
I shouldn't give up so easily after preparing for so long. If the door in the country is closed, I decided to look for materials related to limb lengthening procedures abroad. By chance, I learned from an overseas website (make me taller) that Professor Song Hae-ryong of Korea University Guro Hospital performs such procedures. When I entered Professor Song's website, I learned that Korea University Guro Hospital, where Professor Song works, is a very large and well-established hospital. Professor Song is the head of the Department of Orthopedics at the hospital and has a high reputation and extensive experience in the field of dwarfism. With some anticipation, I sent an email to Professor Song's assistant, Mr. Park Gwang-won (a young and very talented specialist). Professor Song and Mr. Park Gwang-won quickly responded to me. After that, I exchanged information and inquiries with Mr. Park and Professor Song's other student, Mr. Wang (Mr. Wang came to Korea from Shanghai, China to receive special instruction from Professor Song).
Before the surgery, I knew that patients undergoing thigh lengthening surgery had to lie in the hospital room all week and couldn't move. That makes me feel a lot of fear. I'm most afraid of the feeling of being so restricted and unable to move. Therefore, before going to Korea, I sent over 20 emails to Mr. Park to inquire about various things, including surgery costs, hospitalization time, how long after surgery I could walk, and how long after surgery I could remove the internal fixation. I am cautious, so I repeatedly asked some questions several times, and Mr. Park answered quickly and kindly. Professor Song and Mr. Park usually attend conferences held in various regions of Korea or overseas. So, when Mr. Park couldn't reply quickly, he apologized to me. He said he was sorry for the late reply because he was overseas and didn't have internet access. This reply was truly touching. In the midst of his busy schedule, he patiently explained to a patient he had never met. I decided to have surgery at this hospital. But before the surgery, I decided to go to Korea and do a direct confirmation investigation.
In mid-May, I took a flight to Seoul, Korea. Overcoming language and transportation problems, I finally arrived at Guro Hospital, Korea University. Looking at the exterior and the crowded patients, I could see that it was quite a large hospital. Soon I was able to meet Professor Song. Professor Song looked like a respected specialist behind his glasses. After meeting me, he said "welcome, welcome" in a row, and at the same time introduced me to two of his Chinese students. One was Dr. Kang from Xi'an, China, and the other was Dr. Wang from Shanghai, China, both of whom were promising specialists. We studied the surgical methods and various problems together, and finally I decided to have surgery at this hospital. Professor Song said that he would perform the procedure using the LON (lengthening on nail) method, which combines a unilateral support to insert a nail into the bone marrow to lengthen it in a staged manner. In other words, he would first operate on one leg and then operate on the other leg two weeks later, which costs a little more than operating on both legs at the same time. I was still worried about not being able to move after the surgery, so I decided to go with the staged method.
