[MBC Newsdesk] A visit by surgeon with achondroplasia… Short stature, but big dreams

◀ 앵커 ▶키가 130cm밖에 안 되는 장애를 극복하고, 미국 최고 의대 교수가 된 미국인이 우리나라를 찾았습니다.키가 자라지 않는다고 꿈이 자라지 않는 건 아니라는 게 그의 메시지입니다.김나리 기자입니다.

◀ News Anchor▶ An American who overcame a disability of only 130cm in height and became a professor at the best medical school in the United States has visited Korea. His message is that dreams don't stop growing just because height doesn't grow. This is reporter Kim Na-ri.

◀ 리포트 ▶보통 사람의 허리까지 오는 키의 미국인 의사.역시 자신과 같은 저신장증 환자를 맞이합니다."그렇게 높은 구두를 신으니까 무릎이랑 허리가 아프죠."존스홉킨스 의대 소아정형외과 마이클 에인 교수입니다.뼈가 자라지 않는 장애로 키는 130센티미터.놀림 받으며 자라면서도 가졌던 꿈은 의사였습니다.결국 30곳의 의대에 지원하고 다 떨어졌지만 다음해에 수십 곳에 또 지원해 단 1곳에 합격한 게 꿈의 시작이었습니다.

◀ Report ▶ An American doctor whose height reaches up to the waist of an average person. He also welcomes patients with achondroplasia just like him. "Wearing such high heels hurts your knees and back." This is Dr. Michael Ain, professor of pediatric orthopedics at Johns Hopkins Medical School. His height is 130 centimeters due to a disability that prevents bone growth. His dream, while growing up being ridiculed, was to become a doctor. Eventually, he applied to 30 medical schools and failed, but the following year he applied to dozens more, and his dream began when he was accepted into only one place.

◀ 마이클 에인/미국 존스홉킨스 의대 외과교수 ▶"사람들은 키 작은 사람은 의사가 될 수 없다며 다른 일을 찾아보라 했습니다. 하지만 이런 말에 포기할 생각은 없었습니다."

◀ Michael Ain / Professor of Surgery, Johns Hopkins Medical School, USA ▶ "People told me that a short person cannot become a doctor and told me to look for something else. But I had no intention of giving up on these words."

한국의 저신장증 단체가 그를 초청한 이유도 사회진출을 준비하는 젊은 환자들에게 꼭 힘이 돼달라는 것이었습니다.

The reason why the Korean achondroplasia organization invited him was to be a source of strength for young patients preparing to enter society.

◀ 윤미령 ▶"본인이 직접 겪어 보신 것을 토대로 말씀을 해주시니까 도움도 많이 되고..."

◀ Yoon Mi-ryeong ▶ "It's very helpful because he speaks based on what he has experienced himself..."

의사로서 자신의 병인 저신장증을 연구한 경험을 살려 환자들에게 치료법을 조언하기도 했습니다.

As a doctor, he also advised patients on treatment methods based on his experience of studying achondroplasia, his own disease.

"모두가 꿈을 이룰 수 있기를 바랍니다. 대통령이 꿈이라면 대통령이 될 수 있어야 합니다."

"I hope everyone can achieve their dreams. If your dream is to be president, you should be able to become president."

우리나라의 저신장증 환자는 3천 명.사회에선 소수지만 그들도 꿈을 이뤄야 한다는 게 에인 교수의 말입니다.

There are 3,000 achondroplasia patients in Korea. Professor Ain says that although they are a minority in society, they too must realize their dreams.
