Ms. Kim, a 65-year-old woman, had been suffering from right knee joint pain that started 3 years ago. She had consistently received medication and physical therapy for 3 years, and also received acupuncture and moxibustion at an oriental medicine clinic, but her symptoms did not improve, and her pain worsened to the point where it became difficult to walk recently. Then, she visited the Artificial Joint Clinic at Korea University Guro Hospital and was diagnosed with severe degenerative arthritis as a result of the examination and underwent knee replacement surgery. After the surgery, she was able to recover quickly thanks to the systematic rehabilitation treatment in connection with the Sports Medicine Room of Korea University Guro Hospital, and is currently enjoying daily life and leisure activities as well as walking, and is periodically observing the progress at the outpatient clinic.
Lee, a 14-year-old middle school student, usually had back pain when sitting in a chair for a long time, but she lived without any special treatment. Then, a checkup vehicle from the Scoliosis Clinic of Korea University Guro Hospital visited the school and received a free checkup, and she was diagnosed with scoliosis. Initially, she wore a brace and received conservative treatment, but a regular examination showed that the scoliosis was gradually progressing, so she underwent scoliosis correction surgery. Afterwards, she received rehabilitation treatment and is now satisfied with her straightened back and reduced back pain.

Currently, Korean society is rapidly entering an aging society, and the number of people participating in various leisure activities and sports activities is also increasing. As a result, various musculoskeletal diseases are increasing, and sports injuries and trauma are also rapidly increasing. The Department of Orthopedics at Korea University Guro Hospital has established a systematic diagnosis and treatment system, ranging from diagnosis and treatment to rehabilitation for various musculoskeletal diseases. In addition, we are establishing a systematic medical care system in connection with the local community for rare diseases in the field of orthopedics, thereby establishing our status as a hospital specialized in this field.

▷ Professional treatment for joint diseases that are rapidly increasing due to the aging society
As the aging society progresses, fractures and degenerative diseases of the joints such as the hip, knee, shoulder, ankle, and waist are rapidly increasing. Accordingly, the Department of Orthopedics at Guro Hospital provides systematic medical care by specialized medical staff for each part. In particular, in the case of knee joints, rather than unconditionally performing artificial joint surgery on patients with degenerative joint disease, treatment is subdivided and total knee replacement, partial knee replacement, osteotomy, and articular cartilage regeneration are performed in a customized manner depending on the patient's condition. In particular, the Guro Hospital Orthopedic Artificial Joint Clinic is recognized for its skills, possessing richer clinical experience and research results than any other university hospital in the case of partial replacement.

▷ Subdivided medical care system for a wide range of orthopedic diseases and trauma patients
Orthopedic-related diseases are very diverse, as are the number of bones, joints, muscles, and ligaments in our body. Currently, the Department of Orthopedics at Korea University Guro Hospital has established a system that can diagnose and treat almost all orthopedic fields, and operates various clinics for more specialized treatment for each disease. We operate specialized clinics such as the Hip Joint Clinic, Knee Joint Clinic, Pediatric Deformity and Dwarfism Clinic, Shoulder and Elbow Joint Clinic, Scoliosis Clinic, Artificial Joint Clinic, Foot Joint Clinic, Spine Clinic, and Trauma Fracture Clinic, and medical staff who are currently recognized for their excellence in each field are in charge of medical care.

▷ From diagnosis and treatment to rehabilitation - Establishment of a systematic system
In orthopedic diseases and injuries, diagnosis and treatment are important, but rehabilitation is just as important. The importance of rehabilitation has been emphasized more recently because the purpose of orthopedic treatment is to enable patients to move, engage in daily life, and, in some cases, even participate in sports activities.
The Department of Orthopedics at Guro Hospital helps patients who have undergone surgery or are undergoing conservative treatment at the outpatient clinic to rehabilitate and treat in connection with the Sports Medicine Room (Director of Orthopedics Professor Lim Hong-cheol), which greatly advances the patient's recovery and return to daily life than in the past, and increases patient satisfaction.

▷ Establishing its status as a specialized medical institution and performing its role as a base hospital linked to the local community
The Pediatric Deformity and Dwarfism Clinic and Scoliosis Clinic operated by the Department of Orthopedics at Guro Hospital are specialized clinics within the Department of Orthopedics at Guro Hospital and occupy a unique position in Korea in the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric and intractable diseases. In the case of pediatric and intractable diseases, we are proceeding with treatment for patients in the facilities by linking with various social welfare facilities, and are also playing a role as a social public institution by partially subsidizing the costs required for diagnosis and treatment through public interest foundations.
In the case of the Scoliosis Clinic, we have a vehicle equipped for checkups and conduct free checkups and treatment at schools or facilities in the area, thereby discovering patients who need treatment in advance and treating them appropriately, thereby increasing the efficiency of early detection and treatment. In addition, in the case of fracture and trauma patients, we are doing our best to provide emergency medical care and treatment while performing our role as a base hospital, and since patient transfer is possible via helicopter using the rooftop heliport, we have established a system that allows immediate treatment and treatment even for patients with severe trauma.

▷ Fulfilling its role as a university hospital through clinical and basic research and academic activities
For university hospitals, patient care and treatment are important, but research in basic medical science and active academic activities cannot be neglected. The Department of Orthopedics at Guro Hospital has been publishing dozens of research papers in SCI or SCIE-level international journals every year, with 25 papers in 2008, 32 papers in 2009, and 35 papers in 2010. In addition, we are encouraging the research of faculty members through various incentives, and are enhancing the status of the Department of Orthopedics at Guro Hospital by making many research presentations at domestic and international conferences. We are also focusing on basic research and are dedicated to various cellular and molecular biological studies in the field of orthopedics, and are reporting excellent research results.
Recently, the Department of Orthopedics at Guro Hospital was selected as a national ‘Hospital Specialization Center - Bone Defect/Disease Convergence Treatment Center’, and as a result, we will receive 5 billion won in national research funds over 5 years, allowing us to accelerate basic research even further. Based on these diverse research and academic activities, the Department of Orthopedics at Korea University Guro Hospital will lead the development of Korean medicine and do its best to promote the health of patients.
